Should there be any doubt that Summerville has high quality art to offer, all one has to do is step through the doors of Art Central at 102 Central Ave in Summerville Center to be reassured. Owned and operated by a cooperative group of thirteen artists, seven of whom are founding members, the Gallery offers an array of artistic styles, subjects and media equal to that found in many of the downtown Charleston galleries. This is more than mere opinion; it is simple truth provable by the fact that most of the artists involved with the cooperative gallery can lay claim to participation in at least one of the Charleston galleries boasting tony addresses like East Bay and Broad Streets.

This Summerville gallery was initiated eleven years ago with the guiding support of D.R.E.A.M. (Downtown Restoration, Enhancement and Management) a nonprofit group committed to the enhancement and selective development of the downtown Summerville Center area. The original group of artists was willing to put in time, effort and capital to create something sustainable and it has paid off. Now a popular anchor for Summerville's art community, there is a lengthy waiting list for those who would very much like to be involved in the organization.

Art Central offers mainly two-dimensional visual art with a smaller selection of three-dimensional pieces with lovely jewelry designed in semi-precious stones, some creative pottery work and hand crafted walking sticks for variety. The group works in committee to make judicious decisions regarding newcomers, consignment work, marketing and the esthetics of the gallery so the quality of the work remains at a very particular standard. Art Central Gallery is currently keeping a keen eye out for high quality sculpture work that will add another facet to their collections.

Though some of the cooperative's original artists have moved on or relocated, the magic number for this art community remains at thirteen. As individuals, the artists maintain their own home studios and each in their own way shares their talent by teaching art classes and participating in speaking engagements, but as the core group they remain friends, partners and businesswomen who genuinely like and support one another.

Extending that supportive spirit to the art community, Art Central once again in collaboration with D.R.E.A.M, has provided opportunity for up and coming artists to display their works at art walks conducted on "Short" Central Avenue every third Thursday of the month from 5pm - 8pm, March through September. Evidence of their artistic vision evolving in Summerville can be seen as booths are erected, art is displayed, crafters show their wares and local stores offer special promotions. Entertainment is provided and all who attend enjoy a festival-like atmosphere.
